The first La Brea Bakery was opened in 1989 by top chef Nancy Silverton. She won the prestigious James Beard award for "Pastry Chef of the Year" in 1990. Since then, La Brea breads have been considered by many the standard for artisanal breads throughout the country.
Silverton is also known as the creator of Campanile Restaurant, a cherished Los Angeles eatery. In 2006, she partnered with Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich to open Osteria Mozza, which has since been hailed by critics as one of the finest new restaurants in Southern California.
