The art of pressing coins into commemorative souvenirs dates back almost 200 years.
A Viennese jeweler supposedly made the first pressed coins in Austria in 1818, but the elongated coin phenomenon didn’t hit the United States until the 1892-1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Four pressed-coin designs commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America—and the coins are still prized by collectors today.
Elongated coins are created when a coin is squeezed between 2 rollers, one of which has an engraving on its surface. The coin is first flattened into an oval shape, and then the engraving roller permanently presses a special picture or message into it.
